Not your typical orphanage- or maybe it is?

What comes to mind when I say the word orphanage? A google search gives an impression of youth and poverty, of malnourishment and neglect. But Egyam Children’s Home is anything but. You walk through gates to see an expansive blue building, an outdoor terrace with rows of chairs for group events, and a field behind the back for playing soccer. A walk to the left shows a homegrown garden with enough space for a water purifying project that is in the works. Though not luxurious by any means, the orphanage is comfortable, and safe. There are fans in every room and the mattresses are comfortable. Rooms have a wardrobe and side-table, outlets, and screens over the windows for keeping the mosquitos out. Everyone has enough to eat, but dessert is rare and no food ever goes to waste. There are two sleeping quarters separated by gender for the youth, and there are extra rooms in the neighboring building for older guests and employees. Another guest house on the right side of the property has a living room and fridge. The youth are aged 2-20s, with the group home supporting youth as they pursue higher education. I was over the moon to meet a group of girls there ages 13-22 who were kind, friendly, and helpful. I do not know what I was expecting, but the orphanage that was my home for the summer of 2021 exceeded expectations. My parents were so glad to know that I was comfortable.
